Best of 2011

This has been a wonderfully busy week and I’m now getting a chance to share some of the projects I’ve been working on. Tomorrow is the Oregon Bride Magazine Best Of event featuring the best vendors in Oregon. It’s a great time to honor vendors for their hard work and it’s also open to anyone getting married (or thinking about getting married). There will be a runway fashion show, food sampling and a photo booth from Paparazzi. This event leads up to the new issue of Oregon Bride Magazine which will feature a photo spread, “Unveiled” styled by Nora Sheils of Bridal Bliss. Our invitations are part of this inspiration board and I can’t wait to get my hands on the new issue to see the final product!

This is always a fun event and brides get a great swag bag including swanky promos and the new issue of Oregon Bride Magazine. This year we were able to include a promotional piece and designed the fans shown below (all 300 of them – whew). The great part about these paddle fans are that they make beautiful, unique and practical wedding programs. Double sided printing will hold all of the information needed including the wedding party, ceremony and thank you’s. Handles and ribbon come in many colors to coordinate with your bridal colors. Great for summer ceremonies and destination events to keep your guests cool.

I can’t wait to go to this event and we hope you join us! Last year we were fortunate enough to win Best of 2010 Most Creative Favors in Portland. I’ll make sure and take photos of the night to share with you. Keep your fingers crossed and maybe we’ll bring home another award.

Sunday FUN Day

This has been one hectic week. I’m working on a bunch of new wedding jobs and on a project for the upcoming Oregon Bride Best Of show. There’s so many great things happing for Crave Design but as you know it’s Sunday… and that’s fun day, my friend. It’s time for another top 10 list and it’s all about getting to know me better.

Top 10 Things about Lisa, owner of Crave Design:

1. I have a degree in graphic design from Art Institute of Portland and a business degree from Portland Community College. I think my parents thoughts I was crazy for going to art school.

2. I have always wanted to own my own business but never knew exactly what it would be. When I was in art school I thought I would go into advertising but it became unappealing when I learned some employees practically lived at work.

3. I’ve always loved to write. When I was in grade school I made up little story books all the time. After high school I attended the University of Oregon where I studied journalism. I promptly quit when I learned it’s way more fun to make things up than to write about the facts.

4. When I was growing up I loved making collages, cards, writing and doodling.

5. I actually own a t-shirt that says “I {heart} Paper”.

6. I work out of my home with two fury assistance. They specialize in stealing my chair when I get up to use the paper cutter.

7. My family is terrific. I love spending time with my sister, her husband and my 2 year old nephew.

8. I’m addicted to candy, sparkly objects, and pink. I think I’ve covered all this in previous posts.

9. I’d love to travel the world. So far I’ve been to India & the Carribbean. As soon as I can figure out how to write off “world travel” I’ll conquor some more countries. Searching for new items to make invitations is my favorite thing to do while traveling so I’m not far off!

10. An average work day for me starts around 10am and doesn’t end til 2am the next day. I really love what I do but I wish there were more hours in the day. Oh well…

I hope you’ve all had a great week. If you’d like to know anything else about me feel free to leave a question at the end of this post. Also if you have any ideas for Top 10 lists for my Sunday blogs leave me a message. Okay guys go enjoy your day! I’ll catch you up on my other projects next.

Fill It In

I was going through the June 2011 issue of Brides Magazine and saw this super cute tag idea for a wedding. It’s pretty much the ole’ fill in the blanks that I use to love as a kid. I thought this idea would be great not only for advice tags but also bachelorette parties, favor tags, bridal showers… the list is endless.

These are by seafoamsafari.etsy.com

I couldn’t resist making a little quick idea of my own. Seriously the ideas are endless and super fun!

Tell a Story

When I’m designing for a couple who are about to get married, the first thing we do is meet for coffee. It’s an important part of my process to meet the bride & groom and talk to them about what’s consuming their every waking thought – the wedding! Okay maybe that’s more true for the bride but you get the point. It’s really fun for me to hear about the things they’ve already picked out before they call me. One of the most important items to book ahead are the locations as they can already be filling up with other events. Also, the dress is a must – not only is it super fun to look for but it’s important to get early for ordering purposes and fittings. Then it’s on to the invitations!

During the first meeting I’ll bring a ton of samples to pick through and talk about. Anything your mind can imagine I can incorporate into a stunning invitation suite. We’ll also go through styles, motifs, paper samples, & wording. I know it may seem overwhelming but my clients have told me repeatedly that this process has been the most enjoyable part of the planning process! So never fear we are just talking over coffee about your big day and in the end you will be amazed at how your wedding invitations really are about you!

So there is always something about the invitation that tells a story about the couples. Beautiful nature graphics can communicate the setting you grew up in, a rose from a first date, or a park where you first kissed. Maybe your venue has a special significance and we can incorporate graphics for that as well. Photographs are a perfect way to use your engagement photos! We can print them directly into the invitation or design them to be separate so that guests can frame them for years to come. Monograms and color themes can easily be used throughout your wedding and can later be used for thank you cards and personal stationery.

I had a sweet couple years ago that told me they had no theme to their wedding. I asked about colors or flowers but they were pretty undecided – just fun and colorful! As we began talking I noticed that the soon to be groom kept calling his lovely fiancee, Pixie. I knew that wasn’t her name and became curious about the pet name. She blushed and told me that they met on a dating site. I could tell she was a little embarassed but come on we all know someone who met this way. So I told her it didn’t matter how they met as long as they found one another. Apparently her screen name was Pixie and it just sort of stuck. I knew immediately that was going to be the “something special” in their invitations. Each invite was colorfully adorned with a pixie stick inside. Although not everyone knew the story behind the unexpected treat, it made for a heartfelt story when the guests asked.

My couple was thrilled that they could tell their story and I was excited to put a little bit of a theme to their wedding. It really is the smallest of details that can tell your story and oh what a story it usually is! I would love to meet with you about your upcoming wedding. A chat over coffee about the biggest day of your life – what could be more fun?!

Take a Break

For those of you who own your own small business, you know it’s tons of work. There is no normal Monday thru Friday with weekends off. You know what? That’s okay because if you’re like me you love what you do. I pretty much eat, sleep, drink paper & design. It’s really hard at night to even shut off my brain to get my zzzz’s in before it’s time to start another day. I was just reading through my friend Andrea’s blog, she owns Brand & Bloom, about how I should carve out some time for myself. Her blog is really quite brilliant and you should check it out. There are great workbooks, courses, and tips on how to make your business thrive.

Andrea’s blog titled 4 Steps to Home Office Harmony is great and today I’m working on step #3 – Take Two Days off a Week. Okay so it’s just one day and I will admit that some work has crept in like writing this little blog. Today started with a meeting with the mother of the bride regarding upcoming invitations for her daughter. It may seem like work but it was really fun to create invitations over coffee and talk. And while I am blogging right now, I’m also enjoying lunch out at Panera (and it’s delicious). What can I say -  I’m a multitasker at heart!

After my morning meeting I thought about going home to work but told myself that I should take the rest of today to breath… you have to step away from your work sometimes. So after my coffee meeting I strolled around Lake Oswego in a few shops. I couldn’t help myself from the shiny gems in Lucky Me Gift Boutique and bought a few beautiful items – I swear they just followed me home.

Now that I’m wrapping up lunch at the mall I might as well finish up with a movie. And what else would I be watching but the movie Bridesmaids. I tell you my brain is never far away from the weddings. To finish up my day it’s a quick stop at Craft Warehouse to check out what’s new. I stop in every few weeks just to check out the products and their design team always comes up with new ideas with their products. It’s all very inspiring and I take it all in to create new designs.

Whew what a great day! Take some time to check out Brand & Bloom’s blog it has some great information for all you business owners. Yay!

Seeing Double

I was flipping through the new issue of Inside Magazine Weddings a few days ago and noting all the beautiful Real Weddings that they publish. Inside Magazine is a great reference for any bride looking to put a little glamour and fabulocity into their wedding day. The real weddings that they write about are usually quite extravagant and luxurious, featuring wedding planners at the top of their game. Often times celebrity weddings are features and it’s always fun to see the details of those events.

This issue I was noting that they were giving a lot of focus to the wedding stationery of each event, and I’m seriously loving that! As I was flipping through I saw this menu and stopped short – it looked so similar to a menu I created for a lovely couple just a few years ago in 2009 for their Maui wedding. The fonts and such are different but the overall idea is the same including the handmade woven paper and starfish. This invitation was created by Arabesque Stationer out of Naples, Florida in 2010. I wish my little menu had equally fabulous photography but alas we will go will this side by side look.

Here’s what today’s post is really about… is copying the sincerest form of flattery? The first point I want to make is that in no way do I think either myself or the other designer copied this idea. Or maybe we did and it came from another source… I will tell you now that there are very few originial ideas floating out there in the world. My job is to give the couple exactly what they want.  The 2010 wedding design created by Arabesque Stationer was for a couple who met working at the White House. There was literally an ice sculpture of the White House at their wedding. My fellow readers I tell you now – I don’t roll in those circles. It’s nearly impossible that they saw my idea and decided to use it for their own.

From my point of view I’m totally extatic to see this featured in Inside Magazing Weddings. You know what it does tell me? I’m doing something right!! My designs and ideas and overall love for what I do is right up there with the big dogs. WOOOHOOO! Can I make another point? This little menu that sat on the plates of this extravagent wedding was featured on page 112 of the magazine – ON THE WHOLE PAGE. You may not realize just how amazing this really is; rarely does even a whole wedding invitation set get featured on a full page alone. These honors are usually reserved for the ubber detailed cake, the stunning gown or the event space and rightly so.

But can I take a minute to stand up and applaud whoever decided to feature this little menu on it’s own? BRAVO! It really make my heart swell because if you have read any of my other posts you know it’s all in the details even if it is a little menu.

So yes, I would say that copying is the sincerest form of flattery. I once saw a blog post using one of my bridal shower designs – the girl posted that she couldn’t afford to buy the invitations but referenced my website and gushed about how people should check me out. It’s true I couldn’t make a living if everyone did this but she was INSPIRED. Can I share a secret? There are sooo many local designers that do exactly what I do and they INSPIRE me daily. I don’t feel threatened that we all do the same thing -there are a lot of you brides out there and only one of lil’ ole’ me! So to all my vendors – be inspired by your competition. We all need the support of others who understand exactly what we do. And to all of my brides – you are so lucky to have so many talented choices. We love you, we want to work with you, but above all else we want your wedding to be the best!

These vendors all make absolutely amazing handmade invitations and I’m giving them some love. A big THANK YOU for inspiring others including me. Best wishes as you work on your 2011 wedding season. New and Blue, Puddle Jumpin’ Cards, Hi, Friend Design, Studio Olivine, Portland Paper Dolls,  Paper Bloom, & Red Pearl Designs. We all offer such unique and different designs for our brides.

To all those brides out there, Crave Design loves what we do and it shows in everything we create. We hope you continue to follow our blog and increasing sample collection. Call us for a free consultation and we’ll show you why we are the best at what we do!

Sweet on You

The new issue of Martha Stewart Weddings is out on the shelves and this issue is goooood! It’s the annual DIY issue and it has some great tips and tricks to adding personal touches to your invitations, flowers, etc. As I was soaking in the the glossy pages I almost fell over when I flipped to the most AMAZING bridal shower ever. Dylan Lauren CEO of Dylan’s Candy Bar (and daughter to designer Ralph Lauren) celebrated her upcoming nuptials to Paul Arrouet with a candy themed bridal event! Okay another fun fact about me…. I {heart} candy. It’s a serious love affair so don’t judge. Have you checked out Dylan’s Candy Bar? Go check it out now! No seriously… right now.

Now get your peepers poppin’ for some sweet eye candy. I would absolutely love to own all of the candy rings shown. They are absolutely gorgeous and according to the article I can make them myself – so I’m going to!  Click here for instructions on how to make one of your very own. If you end up making one you have to email or post or twitter or facebook me – it’s a must! These jewels were created by Barcelona bakery Escriba. The second photo is an insane smorgesboard of candy treats. *drool* If you love these photos there are tons more on Martha Stewarts Weddings magazine website and it’s definately worth checking out.

How sweet it is!

Here’s what you can take from this post – make your wedding about your story. In this wedding the theme seemed obvious since Dylan owns her own successful candy boutique. However, this works equally as well if you and your fiance just have a love of chocolate as an example. After all the word “chocolate” not only creates a great image of delicious delectable treats but also of rich colors which you can translate throughout your wedding. So the smallest of loves can create the most memorable of occassions. A great wedding planner and designer can easily create your visions into reality if you need a little help. Think outside of the normal box when creating decor and favors. This is an article that will inspire me to create many new designs for future weddings and I hope it does the same for you!

Now you can see why I’m so excited about this article. Ah now I feel like visiting a candy store, how about you? Might I suggest you check out a couple local businesses here in Portland – they are two of my favorites. The Candy Buffet and Moonstruck Chocolates which are absolutely fantastic to work with for weddings. There are many more terrific vendors but I’m afraid my tummy is growling… time to enjoy some sweet sweet candy.

Sunday FUN Day!

It’s the end of the week and I can’t think of a better way to end it than with a Top10 list. Let’s start with another fun fact about me: I love movies. It’s actually probably  unhealthy how much time and money I spend watching them but really I don’t care – we all have our vices, right? Usually when I’m working in the studio I’ll have a movie on in the background to keep me company. And truly my favorite while working are romantic comedies usually centering around weddings. What can I say – I’m a hopeless romantic from head to toe!

So without further adieu here’s my Top 10 favorite movies to watch while designing wedding invitations. They are in no particular order because honestly I couldn’t figure out which ones I loved more… keeping it to ten was hard enough.

So what are your favorite movies? I’d love ot hear them so leave a message below!
