Take a Seat

Over this past year I’ve received requests from brides to create seating charts for their wedding receptions. It got me thinking about the benefits of a chart over individual place cards that are so useful to seat your friends and family.

So what’s difference between the two & what are the benefits?

Traditionally I’ll receive requests for the individual guests to be written out on their own card to escort them to their designated table. These little cards are cleverly refered to as “Escort Cards” and are usually found on a table when you enter the reception area beautifully organized alphebetically by last name. Once you get to your table sometimes you will find another matching card to designate your individual seat and these are called “Place Cards”. One benefit of designating your guests table is to group people together that know each other (ie. work friends, family members, childhood friends, etc.). The main benefit to designating specific seats at a table is usually meal related. Place cards can be color coded or graphically coded to indicate a meal choice for that guest.

It’s all about organizing the details. See all these little cards really do serve a purpose! I’m sure you can think of even more reasons why they would be useful at your wedding.

Now back to those seating charts… I suppose they don’t sound very exciting but with a little creativity they can create a special detail for years to come. A seating chart eliminates all those individual Escort Cards you would find coming into a reception. Instead guests would stop by the chart to quickly locate their name and designated table. *Note: you can still have Place Cards at each table for specific seating if you are offering guests a choice in meals. A seating chart saves on space for more intimate venues as it can be hung on a wall or propped on an easel. They also save on paper if you are concerned with what will happen with all those individual cards once they’ve served their purpose.

Here’s the creative part about seating charts that gets me all excited – they can be made a million different ways! Below you can see that one bride used an engagement photo as the focal point and we created table cards with the guests names listed below. Now that she and her man are in wedded bliss they hang this framed beauty in their home as reminder of those they shared their day with. The second seating chart was created with lush materials including handmade japanese paper which covered the entire board. Double sided satin gold ribbon held each card into place, while the scroll design pulled graphic elements in from the rest of the wedding.

As with everything to do with weddings you have choices! Be as creative as you want and customize it to your special day. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions!

Purple Haze

The color I’m loving right now is purple in all of it’s many variations. I find myself buying more clothes in this shade and wearing more makeup in these beautiful hues. Not only am I developing my own love of purple but it seems the bridal world is as well. Whether it’s the color of your wedding flowers (ie. lilacs, lavender, orchids) or the color of your bridesmaids dresses (ie. amethyst, indigo, plum), purples are stunning! So is there meaning behind this intriguing color? It seems there is – with all the beautiful flowers in these shades, purple brings us closer to nature. Maybe living in the Pacific NW has us seeing purples more frequently and feeling drawn to them as we invite our guests to experience the nature in Oregon.

Purple has also been considered the color for royalty in many cultures for many centuries. I find a peak of purple throughout a wedding does bring a sense of regalness to an event. Not to mention that this color is a stunning jewel tone. Where as if a couple chooses a deep purple throughout the wedding it gives it more a grand royal feeling – and who doesn’t want to feel like a princess on their special day? On the opposite end of the spectrum a lighter purple brings the feeling of romance. Ah now doesn’t that just scream wedding day? Lighter flirtier shades of purple bring thoughts of sweetness and love.

I’ve put together a few combinations to show you how amazing purple really can be. I love to use the darker purples as the focal point of a design – consider it the new black. The brighter colors like chartreuse green make everything pop and a use of green brings the feeling of nature with a modern Portland flair. Using a purple in the middle of the spectrum with a deep granite color gives a regal feeling. Use the granite as a main color and the purple as a accent and it becomes creative. If you choose the lighter purples think wispy and romantic. Pair this color with a beige, light peach, or even a lighter purple and it’s pure amour.

I hope you have fallen in love with purple as much as I have. I’m rockin’ the purple eyeshadow right now *wink*.

EXCITED! I woke up this morning to learn that a wedding we did work for is now featured on the oh so stylish website Style Me Pretty! I want to first congratulate Nora Sheils of Bridal Bliss for such a fantastic job putting this wedding together. She was the one who contacted me to design and print the peacock themed placecards and signage for this beautiful event. Also Powers Studios who is all over my website and blog because of their fantastic skills – you guys truly are my favorite and I will refer you until my lips fall off.

It really is fantastic to see my work grouped with all the other talented vendors of Portland. Sometimes when I’m sitting in my little studio it’s hard to imagine what it is all going to look like on that magical day. This collage and article from Style Me Pretty reminds me why I do this as a career – and the smiles on the couples faces always melt my heart. As a bride & groom you may not realize how you touch the lives of people who put your special day together, but it’s because of your love that I work so hard every day.

So I need you all to go and check out the fantastic post from Style Me Pretty. And of course I had to post a few of the amazing photos of our work which are above. Ah it’s going to be a great day. Leave me a message and let me know what you think. And seriously you all need to check out Syle Me Pretty’s blog and all the had work that went into this event. You will be INSPIRED!<

Happy, Shiny, New!

This is so exciting to be able to welcome everyone to my new and improved website and blog! Building a new website is such a turning point for Crave Design – we’ve moved from a little start up business to creating a niche in the bridal industry for beautiful wedding stationery. So I’m taking this opportunity to show and share and tell you about all the ways I love paper…I hope you enjoy it!

There’s something I must admit about myself from the beginning, I’m drawn to shiny objects. I know, I know it sounds like the punch line to some joke but really it’s so true. If I’m standing in the middle of the grocery store staring at tea to buy, I’ll inevitably pick the packaging with the silver foiling and scrolling design. Even better if it’s in a box shapped unique from the other ones beside it on the shelf. Truthfully I won’t even be able to control myself and before I know it it’s in my little basket. Can you relate?

So the “shiny” thing is kind of a part of every aspect of my life including design (and of course paper). When I’m creating invitations for a wedding there’s nothing I love more than choosing a little something special to make the design *sparkle*. If I’m using a matte or textured paper then usually there’s a little embellishment to make the upcoming event shine. I’m always trying new things to embelish invitations and find it’s these details that tell the story of the couples they’re created for… it really is all about the details.

Here are some shiny details to enjoy:
