A few weeks ago I went to an Army surplus store with some friends. They needed some hunting gear and I just happened to be in the car at the time. So away we went into a store filled with everything from gas masks to light bulbs. Not much caught my attention until I found the stores overweight fluffy cat who wanted nothing more to be petted. I obliged and in return found he was laying on a stack of burlap sacks. I’ve been wanting to do something with burlap for awhile now so the texture caught my attention. The burlap ended up being old coffee bags and for only $1.00 I picked it up not knowing where it would lead me.
That burlap sat in my trunk for two weeks before I had an idea one day. I thought the bag would make a great sign of some sort and paired with some new stamps I purchased might make a great seating chart. You can see my process below as I tried to take pictures as I was creating it. The burlap bag was cut in half and I used the side with the most typography. Then using 80% recycled paper I printed guests names on the tags and stamped the table numbers above. Next comes the twine to hold it to the sign. I found that tiny safety pins worked perfect to attach the tags to the sign.

This is an eco friendly solution to a seating chart as it can be used later as artwork in your new home. All the supplies were extremely inexpensive since the main piece was pretty much found. I used stretched canvas board from an art supply store but you could easily build a wood frame out of scrap. Home Depot has a salvage pile of wood at their stores that they give away.
All and all a very fun idea and one for a country chic event. What do you think? I just love using found objects to create something unexpected. Be inspired and send me some responses!
